One of the most thrilling and remarkable television series of over the last decade, “Dexter”, has recently come to an end. “Dexter” is an enchanting television show about a blood-splatter analyst from the Miami Metro Police Department, who has a small secret: he is a serial killer. That’s right, a serial killer. Despite the fact that he’s murdered thousands of people, no one knows except for his deceased father, and later on his sister, Debra. In order to survive in modern society and appear normal, Dexter Morgan lives by a strict set of rules, also known as “The Code”, and keeps close relationships with friends, family, and women. The show ran strong for eight full seasons, until September 22nd, when the infamous television killer officially set down his lethal knives and murderous ways for good in the series finale. The “Dexter” finale left fans cut in two, with some happy or sad. The reaction? Not good. If you haven't watched the final episode, beware: spoilers are lurking in here.
The beloved and incredibly cherished television show has always had high ratings, both with critics and fans, but the series didn’t conclude like anyone imagined; for most fans, this was not a good thing. The finale was rushed, a fan-favorite was abruptly killed, and most of the storylines that writers spent building over time were left unfinished. The ending is being criticized as a “cop-out” that sidestepped the major tension of the show: whether Dexter would ever be discovered as a serial killer and be held accountable for his body of work. Throughout the final season, most fans were anticipating their beloved serial killer to be caught, possibly executed, or perhaps even be killed in the same matter as his victims. Fans were left scratching their heads after the show's final and most controversial scene, which revealed his true fate: a bearded Dexter working as a lumberjack somewhere in the wilderness.
The series finale of the show delivered the largest audience in show and network history, Showtime said Monday. The 9 p.m. airing of the finale drew 2.8 million viewers, up from 2.7 million for last season’s finale. Now, a Dexter spin-off sequel seems very likely, possibly revolving around Dexter’s child, Harrison, or focusing on young Dexter, but there has not been any confirmation — and after the finale, several key characters would no longer be available. As a fan of the show who continued hoping that the final season would be the craziest and the best, it’s easy to see why most fans are so disappointed. I obviously hated it. To all of you Dexter fans out there, what did you think about the killer finale?
