Well, the summer’s over and it’s time to start living accordingly to the bell again. You may have looked at your 2013-2014 school calendar and said, “August 12?? What??” Yes ladies and gentleman, the school year began a week earlier. So, why exactly the change? It’s all about reimbursing the staff for the furlow days they received last year. Yes, it may be only a week’s difference, but the reality is, students appreciate their summer. Clifton Wharton said, “A week does actually make a difference. I like how it was last year. It makes a lot of people feel bitter because their summer’s shortened, even if it’s just a little”.
Despite what students think of the change, the administrators appreciate the extra week! Vice Principal Wendy Szot said, “It doesn’t effect us very much, we like having the students around”. In case you didn’t know, the administrators work nearly nonstop over the summer in order to prepare for the next school year. “I took nine days off the entire summer”, Mrs. Szot said. “I think the biggest thing for students is that the weather’s so warm. Students still want to be in the pool or going to the beach with their friends. They kind of have this mentality of ‘Oh, I still want it to be summer!’” I think it’s safe to say, Mrs. Szot definitely knows what she’s talking about! As far as the school calendar goes, all of our breaks remain the same length, and the school year will end the same week as previous years. It’ll fly by in no time, so why not make the best of it?
