Pay raise suggested for Hemet’s superintendent

Superintendent Barry Kayrell will get a pay raise if the Hemet Unified School District governing board approves the increase Tuesday, July 16.

A staff report prepared for the trustees states that when Kayrell was hired last year, his salary was calculated on the basis of 8 percent salary cuts that other administrators had been given.

Since those pay cuts have been restored to the other employees, it is being suggested that Kayrell’s pay be increased 6.5 percent to $218,325 per year, the report states.

Kayrell began working for Hemet Unified on Oct. 1. Under his contract, which runs through June 30, 2016, he is paid $205,000 annually.

Also on Tuesday, the board will be asked to approve the hiring of David Horton as assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction. He will replace Sally Cawthon, who retired at the end of June.

Horton has been the district’s director of assessment
and accountability. If approved, he will receive a three-year contract that pays $140,518 annually.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at district headquarters, 1791 W. Acacia Ave.
