Hemet school trustees decided Tuesday, May 7, to appoint someone to the board seat that will become vacant July 1.

Bill Sanborn, a member of the Hemet Unified School District Governing Board for almost 22 years, announced recently that he will resign and move to Minnesota with his family.

The board had the option of calling an election or making an appointment to fill the vacancy.
“If we take this to an election, it will cost the district $155,000,” trustee Joe Wojcik said. “It’s a waste of taxpayer money. It’s money better spent elsewhere.”

Only four of the seven trustees were present Tuesday, and they all voted in favor of an appointment. Sanborn was absent, as were Jim Smith and Paul Bakkom.
Board President Marilyn Forst said while money was an important factor in her decision, so was expediency.

“It will be faster to get someone here,” she said of the appointment. “We need that.”
Forst said Sanborn will be missed, but she’s excited about bringing someone new to the board.

Sanborn represents Trustee Area 1, which encompasses Idyllwild, Mountain Center and Pine Cove. His replacement will have to live in that area. The replacement must be 18 years old, a citizen of the state and be registered to vote. Employees of the school district are not eligible to serve.

Applications can be filed between Wednesday, May 8, and May 22. They will be available on the Hemet school district website — http://hemetusd.k12.ca.us/   — or at the district headquarters, 1791 W. Acacia Ave in Hemet.

A committee of Forst and trustees Lisa DeForest and Ross Valenzuela will screen applicants to make sure they can legally serve during a May 28 meeting. Interviews will be held at the June 4 board meeting. The appointment will likely be made following the interviews.

The new trustee will begin serving at the July 16 meeting. The term ends in December 2014.
Sanborn, 55, was appointed to the school board in 1991, and has served continuously since then, having been elected five times.

Sanborn said he is staying on the board through the end of the fiscal year, which ends June 30. He does not want to leave while next year’s budget is being formulated and negotiations with teachers are expected to start, he said.
