Schools compete in Academic Decathlon

   West Valley High School finished in 32nd place and Hemet High was 36th in the state Academic Decathlon competition March 15-17 in Sacramento.

   West Valley, the Riverside County champion, finished 17th in Division 1 and Hemet was ninth in Division 3, as schools were grouped based on their scores at county competitions.

   Granada Hills Charter High School from Los Angeles was the overall winner as 61 schools competed. Granada Hills and secondplace El Camino Real Charter High, also from Los Angeles, will attempt to win California’s 10th consecutive national title at the 32nd Annual United States Academic Decathlon Championship next month in Minneapolis.

   Hemet’s James Estrada had the third-highest individual point total in his grouping and took home a gold medal for art, silver medals for language and literature, science and social science and bronze medals in both economics and mathematics.

   Matthew Malone was the highest individual scorer for Hemet and April Riddle had the most points for West Valley. Hemet’s Christian Giorgiann tied for the bronze medal in varsity for art.
