Hemet High Winter Sports Champions

The holiday season means no school for the students but for winter athletes, it’s still time to work.  This winter break has shown success for the boys varsity basketball team and the girls varsity soccer team.

The basketball team earned some great experience as they hosted the Ted Smith Classic basketball tournament at Hemet High.  The Bulldogs went through their pool undefeated and entered the championship game with La Sierra.  The boys were hot from the floor as they built a 20+ lead throughout the game which is what they needed as the Eagles came fighting back. The Bulldogs won 50-47 and know what they have to do as they prepare for league play.

The girls soccer team hosted the Hemet Tournament and had some very stiff and physical competition from various teams.  Doing most of the damage to the opponents were a strong front line with Krista Haddock scoring often.  The mid-field and defenders kept the ball on our attacking end to help the team go 3-0 into the final championship game.  After getting up 2-0 in the first half, a late ball for the opponent found the net just before half for a 2-1 game.  During the game, one Hemet girl found a clear path to the goal but was clobbered by the goalie, causing the goalie to get a red card and ejected from the game.  As Vista Murietta scored a second time in regulation, the score ended 2-2.  There were two 5-minute overtime periods but no on scored, leaving it up to a shootout.  As our Hemet goalie stopped the first shot from Vista Murietta, all we had to do was make our goals.  Hemet ended up winning the championship in the shootout 4-2.

More sports happened over the holiday as well for wrestling, girls water polo, girls basketball and boys soccer.  As the school year begins again, the Bulldogs will need everyone to come out and support their teams as they enter league play.
