A rare mountain meeting of the Hemet Unified School District board Tuesday, Oct. 2 will double as the first public platform for the district’s newly hired superintendent.

The public portion of the meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. in the multipurpose room of Idyllwild School at 26700 Highway 243 in the San Jacinto Mountains community.

Barry Kayrell starts work Monday, Oct. 1, having been hired Sept. 11. He replaces former Superintendent
Steve Lowder, who left to take a job in Stockton.

Kayrell, who had been superintendent of the 8,600-student Beaumont Unified School District for six years, takes over the top administrative post in the 20,000-student Hemet district, which takes in several remote rural communities, including Idyllwild.

Tuesday’s meeting, Kayrell’s first board meeting, comes as the school board goes on the road for its annual Idyllwild session.

School board President Bill Sanborn, a resident of Idyllwild, said by phone that
having board meetings in outlying areas of the district was his idea 21 years ago.

“We only do it once a year,” he said, “but
the idea is to get the school district cabinet, the superintendent, the assistant superintendents and the board out there to the outlying communities. It gives us a chance to spend a little time walking around the campus, meeting some of the teachers, some of the kids and the staff and administration.”

Similar meetings are held once yearly at Cottonwood School in Aguanga and at Hamilton School in Anza, two rural communities south of Hemet.

The agendas for the meetings are intentionally set light to allow for the driving time. It also gives more meeting time for residents to air their concerns.

Although Kayrell does not have a scheduled address to the public, Sanborn said there will be a time during the meeting when board members and administrators are allowed to comment.
