Hemet High School’s academic decathlon team won six individual medals at the 33rd annual state competition in Sacramento this weekend, the most in the school’s history, according to the team’s coach.

Daniel Casey led Hemet’s team with four individual medals, including golds in music, and in language and literature. He also scored bronze medals in art and in economics. Dallan Gardner won a bronze in physics, while Sean McGivney took a bronze in interview. All are seniors at Hemet.

Hemet’s team finished 40th out of the 65 teams entered in Division II competition.

“I’m really proud to have worked with this group,” said Art Plinski, the team’s coach who has taught history at the school for 20 years.

Hemet West Valley and Elsinore high schools were also in the state competition. Their results were not immediately available.
