Course Description
Chemistry – Class Syllabus
Welcome Back! This class will take you into a discovery of Chemistry. The syllabus will outline the course and serve as a road map to your success. Attitude is everything and you will get out of this class what you put into it. Remember, we come here to learn.
Rules – All rules of HHS will be followed while in class and on campus.
1. Come to class on time. Rushing in after the bell has begun to ring will constitute a
tardy. You must be INSIDE the door when it begins ringing to be counted on
time and not be sent to OCR
2. Attend to personal needs before coming to class. Please do not ask unless you
have a true emergency.
a. Bathroom pass – don’t ask if:
i. It’s already gone – one person at a time
ii. First 10 minutes – you should have gone during passing period
iii. Last 10 minutes – you can wait until passing period
iv. We are doing something – you should be doing it
3. Remain seat and on task. Some labs and activities will require you to move around
the classroom.
4. Keep food, gum, and drinks away from the lab. Leave them in your locker or in your
backpack. It is not safe to eat or drink in a lab setting.
5. Bring required materials every day. You will have time to work on assignments in
class and it would be to your benefit to have your book with you. If you are
consistently not bringing your book and not working on your assignments, you will
be sent to OCR.
6. Talk only when permitted. Be respectful when the teacher or other students are
addressing the class. Quiet talking may be allowed or required at times.
7. Do your own work. Students caught cheating will receive a zero, an after school
detention or in-school suspension, and a phone call home. Both the student who
shares their work AND the person who copies it will suffer the same consequences.
I expect you to do your own work and to be sure that no one is copying it.
8. Always do your best. Complete assignments on time and with your best effort.
9. Respect each other and the classroom environment. Do not mess with my stuff or
the belongings of your classmates.
10. Follow the teacher’s directions immediately. Keep me happy and I will do a better
job of teaching you because I love teaching students that want and are willing to
learn.
Absences
Once enrolled in this class, you are responsible for all course work and assignments. If you are out of class for any reason, it is your responsibility to complete the missed work. Ask a friend, check this website, or see me for notes and assignments. You have twice as many days as excused absences to make up an assignment. After 10 unexcused absences you will be dropped from my class.

Grading Policy Grade Breakdown
A 100% - 90% Homework 40%
B 89% - 80% Labs 15%
C 79% - 70% Tests/Quizzes 40%
D 69% - 60% Participation 5%
F 59% - 0%
Homework
Your work must be present and completed by the beginning of class on the day it is due. All work must be legible, neat, and complete for full credit. Having the assignments labeled and with your name on it also helps! Usually all homework will be turned in at the end of the chapter in a Homework Packet on the day of the test. It will include things like Vocabulary, Review Questions, Worksheets, Study Guide, etc.
Late Work Policy
Minor assignments will be checked and stamped “on time” before we review the homework in class. No stamp = ½ credit. You may complete the assignment later for half credit. Homework Packets, Lab Reports, and other graded assignments will lose a letter grade or 10% for every day it is late for a maximum of four days late. No late work will be accepted beyond four days. Alternative assignments may be given for extended excused absences. Work due on the day of an unexcused absence receives no credit.
Labs
We will have a lot of lab activities to provide hands-on learning. Participation in labs is necessary and included in the overall grade. Lab reports will be submitted. Lab safety is extremely important and messing around during a lab will earn you a zero on that lab.
Quizzes
Will be given sporadically to make sure you are keeping up to date on the material and to prepare for tests. Vocabulary quizzes cover key terms from the chapter.
Tests
Content will be derived from lecture, discussions, labs, and videos, all of which is driven by the book. Therefore, keeping up with the reading is important. We will test regularly on material and incorporate two comprehensive semester final exams. Students will have one week to make up missed tests. This will be done before or after school.
Participation
Includes attention during lecture, contributing to a discussion, cooperating in group work, doing the right thing at the right time, and generally being involved in the class. By doing so, you will be more inclined to become interested in the class and learn something new. In order to participate in class, you need to be in class, therefore your attendance will affect your participation grade.
Course Textbook
We are using the textbook Modern Chemistry, Holt, Rinehart, and Winston as a foundation for the course.
Course Content
Throughout the year, we will cover the California State Science Standards for Chemistry. Theses standards can be viewed here.
