Hemet High Alumni Taylor Van Zee Earns Recognition

Van Zee Named Top 25 Finalists For NFCA Freshman Of The Year

SEATTLE -- Washington freshman utility player Taylor Van Zee has been named as a Top 25 finalists for the NFCA Freshman of the Year Award, announced Thursday.

The list is comprised of freshmen from 23 different schools and includes eight pitchers, two catchers, 11 infielders, one outfielder and three utility players. Three of the 25 finalists are from the Pac-12 conference.

The list will be narrowed down to the top 10 finalists on May 7 and then down to three finalists on May 21. The winner will be presented with a trophy on May 26 during the Women's College World Series banquet in Oklahoma City.

The Hemet, Calif. native, who has grown into one of the vocal leaders on the team, is batting .359 and is tied for third on a potent Husky offense with 41 RBI. She leads the freshmen class with 47 hits (fifth-best on the team) and her 11 doubles is tied for third-best on the squad.

She made her collegiate debut at the UNLV Sportco Kick Off Classic (Feb. 6-8) and responded by going 8-for-16 with two doubles, one triple, a home run and six RBI. Two weeks later, Van Zee was named MVP of the Bank of Hawaii after going 8-for-14 with a double, home run and four RBI. Van Zee hit a home run in the first game of the season and has six so far this season. In Pac-12 play, she ranks second on the team with 14 RBI, including a pair of doubles and homers.

Van Zee and the rest of the Huskies head to Cal next weekend to take on the Bears in a three game series starting on Friday, April 24 at 3 p.m.
