The bad news for the Mountain Pass League is that it only advances its top four golfers to the CIFSouthern Section individual postseason.

The good news is that criterion created a fantastic finish.

Hemet senior Richard Schweitzer won the Mountain Pass League Finals at Diamond Valley Golf Club on Thursday by four strokes, shooting a two-day total of 155 to senior teammate Patrick’s Gorman’s 159. San Jacinto junior Bernard Campos placed third at 163, just ahead of the drama that went along with the final qualifying spot for Monday’s CIF-Southern Section individual regionals.

San Jacinto’s Donovan Esquilin placed fourth at 165 after having to make a par putt on No. 18 following a fourth-place tying birdie by Hemet’s Daniel Niedenthal.

“It was an exciting finish,” Hemet coach Rod Kemp said. “There were more people following that second group than the leaders.”
